ABOUT

About Kwaggasrand School

This school was opened in 1982 with the aim to provide learners, who do not adequately benefit from the mainstream school curriculum of the primary and secondary schools, with an alternative which ensures that each learner reaches his/her maximum potential. This community school provides for a specific need, by following a distinctive adapted curriculum and strives towards producing self-sufficient adults who will make a positive contribution to our country's progress. Close co-operation is maintained between the school, the Technical Colleges, the respective Industrial Councils and the different SETAS to ensure a high standard of training.

Education is offered in specific pre-vocational training from the Junior Secondary phase to Grade 10 Lower Grade. The academic and pre-vocational subjects are offered in an integrated manner to complement each other. The learners are credited with all grades and modules successfully completed when completing their school career. Learners are admitted to the school at the beginning of the year in which they turn 13 years of age. The school maintains an average of about 640 students and provides dual medium tuition (Afrikaans and English) for learners from the feeding areas in and around Pretoria, as prescribed by the Department.

General Information

  1. Kwaggasrand School is a public school. According to current legislation, parents are obliged to pay school fees as determined by the Governing Body and approved by parents at the AGM. School fees are payable strictly monthly in advance, from 1 February to 1 November annually. The school fees are only in respect of the basic operating costs of the school and do not include stationery, transport costs, center and workshop fees, model costs, etc. In terms of legislation, parents may/must apply annually for reduction of, or exemption from school fees, if they are unable to afford the prescribed fee.
  2. Every learner must be in possession of a Departmental reference number (LSEN-number) BEFORE he / she will be admitted. Learners are identified by their mainstream schools and referred to the specific district offices who will evaluate the learner for possible placement in a special school. The districts will then refer a learner to Kwaggasrand School where the necessary placement assessment will be done. According to the learner’s age and academic performance he/she will be admitted in a specific grade.
  3. Learner assessment is ongoing, but progress reports are issued in July and December. Three formal parent evenings are held annually and learners’ progress can be discussed on a regular basis.
  4. Approximately two circulars are issued quarterly and parents should make inquiries should they not receive these letters from their children. An SMS are also sent to parents informing them about the circulars.
  5. Financial accounts are issued monthly.
  6. Learner absence from school without valid excuse is regarded as a serious offence and parents are notified immediately by a SMS. A letter in this regard should be submitted immediately after the absence. Doctor’s appointments should be arranged for after school hours.
  7. Learners selected to represent the school at sport / cultural events, will always receive a letter in this regard.
  8. Parents are fully responsible for the transport fees of their children.  The school is linked to all major municipal bus routes in Pretoria.  To accommodate learners from the Centurion area, a private bus route serves the following areas:
